Tooth Extractions in Toronto

At Riverdale Dental in Toronto, tooth extractions are important for patients who have poorly positioned teeth, badly decayed teeth, abscesses, serious gum disease or to prepare for orthodontic treatment.

Is a tooth extraction painful?

At Riverdale Dental, tooth extractions can be painless. We place a local anesthetic on the surrounding area of the tooth to try and minimize discomfort.

Using precise instruments, we then remove the tooth. If you feel any discomfort during your treatment, our dental team will try and act accordingly.

What happens after extraction?

During your tooth extraction appointment, our team will explain post-op care instructions.

Eating soft foods like ice cream, pudding, soups, applesauce, and smoothies will usually help you in healing faster. You can slowly add solid foods back into your diet – just follow your post-surgical treatment plan.

Some common questions about wisdom tooth extractions.

When is extraction a good choice?

In most people, wisdom teeth start to surface between the ages of 16 to 25. Most people develop four wisdom teeth, but some people may have three or fewer. In fact, some people may never grow wisdom teeth at all.

How will I know if my wisdom teeth need extracting?

If our team at Riverdale Dental is concerned about your wisdom teeth during your regular check-up, we will take an x-ray to examine their positioning. Depending on your age, the positioning of the teeth, and whether or not your mouth can accommodate these teeth, we may recommend either waiting to observe how your wisdom teeth progress or immediately proceeding with treatment planning.

What are some other reasons that my wisdom teeth may need to be removed?

Your wisdom teeth may be impacted, misaligned, or poking or rubbing on your cheeks or tongue, causing irritation. If there is not enough room for them in your mouth, the wisdom teeth can cause crowding and shift among the rest of your teeth. They can also be difficult to keep clean because they are so far back in your mouth and may become decayed.

What is an impacted wisdom tooth?

If a wisdom tooth is impacted, it is growing into your mouth sideways instead of straight up or down. If an impacted wisdom tooth is not removed at the ideal time, it can cause damage to the teeth next to it and potentially trigger significant pain.

What will happen during the wisdom teeth extraction procedure?

During a wisdom tooth extraction, a patient is typically under sedation or general anesthesia. You should not experience any pain during the procedure. As always, your Riverdale Dental team will try and provide a high level of surgical care.

What will I need to do after my wisdom teeth are removed?

During your appointment, our team will explain how you will care for your mouth after the extraction. By following instructions, you can prevent any problems following extraction. In most cases, we'll recommend biting on gauze to keep pressure on the extraction point following surgery, regular application of ice to the area, and eating soft foods for several days.

What types of foods can I eat following the procedure?

After your procedure, we recommend eating soft foods like smoothies, apple sauce, ice cream and pudding – just to name a few. As you heal, you can add solid foods back into your diet.
